Professional Basketball Tours

This month 'In Basketball' wishes you all the best for 2008 and takes a look at the East Coast Challenge Tournament in Sydney, we'll see how to make the Shell Drill more interesting with Lason Perkins, there are 12 tips to becoming a better player and see which Aussie players are playing Division 1 college basketball. As always 'In Basketball' has its great tips for players and coaches.

East Coast Challenge Wrap

The East Coast Challenge (ECC) Tournament was held last week at the Hills Basketball Stadium in Sydney. Teams from the ACT, NSW Metropolitan, Victoria Metropolitan and SA Metropolitan fielded teams in a round robin format tournament. The tournament is for Under 16 & 18's and has been set up to allow both ITC and future state players an opportunity to show case their talents to state coaches, it also allows state coaches an opportunity to not only see their own players under pressure but view the talent from other states. South Australian proved to be the standouts in 2008 with 3 out of 4 teams making the finals of their respective age groups. Victorian metropolitan again showed its intensity and muscle to record some huge wins over their opponents and had both teams contest the Under 16 boys final, while the NSW girls were the highlight for their state with the boys finding it hard to stay in touch with both SA and Victoria. Under 18 NSW state coach Stuart Jones had this to say on the tournament, "it's great to be able to see our players compete at a higher level than what they are use to, to have to play against Victoria and SA who do so many things right allows us to see which players can handle a junior national championship level. I have been proud of my boys and how hard they have played each game." While Brad Luhrs coach of the ACT U/16 boys team had this to say about the tournament, " it is a great opportunity for all involved and probably the most notable area my team improved on over the tournament was to play the game with the intensity that is required at a National Championship."NSW under 16 player Lachlan Urwin was also impressed with the standard of competition. "This tournament is tough, you have to play with intensity all the time, I have been very impressed with the South Australians and Victorians and how physical they are." Some interesting things to come out of the tournament were;

·         How well South Australian  players shoot the ball

·         The improvement of the ACT teams

·         No traditional  6ft 3" or greater Under 16 player in any of  the Victorian teams

The standout player from the tournament was Lauren Nicholson who led the NSW under 16 girls team to a win in the final.

Improving The Shell  By Lason Perkins

The "Shell" drill has become one of the most popular defensive drills among coaches to teach and refine defensive fundamentals. Most coaches use the drill with four offensive players and four defensive players in a half-court setting and cover such aspects as ball pressure, jumping to the ball, help and recover, etc.

Once you have covered the fundamentals, here are a few suggestions that will make the shell drill even better. To read the whole article click here...

Aussie Player College Assault

2007 / 2008 sees a record number of players given an opportunity to gain a good education while still improving their basketball skills at the highest level. The US College basketball game is fanatical to all Americans however it is starting to take our interest more and more in Australia with 40 girls and 32 boys currently playing on a division 1 roster and many more on division 2 and 3 teams. With the exposure to the college game through ESPN, Fox Sports and Internet streaming all junior Australian basketball players can watch these athletes compete almost every day in front of 20,000 plus screaming fans and dream of their chance to be recruited. However it's not easy, training every day, individual weights and skills programs and a full load of classes to attend, but the reward is huge if you become a standout like Andrew Ogilvy or Patrick Mills with attention and stardom like nothing else.
