This month 'In Basketball' takes a look at why do we practice and why practices fail, also a great article by Alan Stein on nutrition for basketball players and don't miss how to give your players confidence when shooting the ball.  As always 'In Basketball' has its great tips for players and coaches in our coaches corner and players tips section.

Why do we practice and why does practice fail?

Judging by internet forums, the great basketball debate is practice vs. games. As evidenced by our development system, most favor games as the principle means of development. Otherwise, why do high school players play six games over a weekend during the recruiting dead period?

Games are important. After all, we play basketball to play basketball, not to train to play basketball. Initially, games serve as the best method for introducing numerous skills and concepts at the same time. If one tried to teach a novice player everything about the game before allowing him to play, nobody would ever play the game, because most people would quit before they learned half of basketball's rules, concepts, strategies, techniques and tactics. However, by playing the game, players learn the rules, skills and strategies through a trial and error process which is refined through coaching and experience.

Nutritional Guide for Basketball Players
By Alan Stein

In order to truly achieve your potential on the court, it is imperative that you develop healthy eating habits. The following info serves as a "nutritional guide" for putting you on the right path. This guide is very basic in nature. For an in depth look at your eating habits you should contact a Registered Dietician (RD). It is important to understand that there are no "bad" foods - any food can be incorporated into your diet in moderation. You should try and reduce your intake of refined sugars (cookies, etc.) and saturated fat (butter, etc.) and eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Optimum basketball performance requires sound nutritional habits. You can get your daily requirements of nutrients through whole food, so don't rely too heavily on the use of supplements (the only exception to that is the addition of a "weight gain" shake for those of you trying to really increase bodyweight). Steer clear of "performance" enhancing supplements; Creatine, ephedrine, etc. because of the possible side effects.

It is very important not to overlook the role nutrition plays in acquiring maximum physical development. What you eat on a daily basis helps determine your body fat levels as well as how much energy you have for intense, rigorous workouts, practices and games.

ABT Basketball Book Of The Month

The Complete Guide To Coaching Girls' Basketball: Building

a Great Team the Carolina Way is a phenomenal book from

University of North Carolina Head Women's Coach, Sylvia

Hatchell, along with girl's coach, Jeff Thomas.

If you coach girl's basketball -- at any level -- this book will

help you immensely.  Coach Hatchell goes beyond discussing

the simple fundamentals of coaching and X's and O's; she delves deeper into the mentality of a coach and the various nuances that can occur (though the fundamentals are important and they are covered in great detail).  The Complete Guide To Coaching Girls' Basketball: Building a Great Team the Carolina Way is loaded with discussions and drills regarding fundamentals, offense and defense.
